My photo book is actually decent!

I made a photo book of some of the pictures I took of my trip to China last month, and had it published by lulu.com for only 10 euros per book (incl. shipping). I ordered three and to my surprise, the quality isn't as bad as I thought it would be. The printing stock is rather thin and the quality of the ink is so-so, thankfully my pictures are all black/white and usually raw, edgy and sullen, so these quality deficiencies are actually an advantage in the experience of the pictures.

Yesterday, for the first time since 7 years, I played baseball again. My arms, my shoulders and my legs protest furiously under the sudden manifestation that occurred this sunday. But hell it was worth it. Though rusty, the technique hasn't perished, neither has the power in my arm, the condition's poor though and my muscles heavily protested after only fifteen minutes of balling. But it felt great to smell the gravel again.

Much of what we designers do involve getting from Idea 1 to Concept X. One of the most efficient methods involves taking notes, which help you to see your ideas on paper and evolve them -- i even think ideas on paper can cause a spark a lot sooner than when you try to develop the concept in your brain. This doesn't apply to everyone of course but it certainly does to me. Cross-referencing notes, leafing back through the notebook, applying old notes to new ideas, and so on. Thomas Edison left us with some great simple tips to develop your own note-taking skills.

The Naked Poodle ontbloot tijdens PICNIC07

While I editing all the rotten images i took from Picnic '07 and in particular of THE NAKED POODLE, i stumbled across this other blogsite which picked up on the press release from Fabrique, sent out the very same day on Naked Poodle. They included a photo I took of one of the groups while they were at work. The photo isn't really that fantastic but i can't help but feel proud for getting an image published for the first time ever.

Officially applied for the Japanese test

Today I mailed out the two forms to officially apply for the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test), Level 4, to be held on December 2nd in London. Level 4 is the first level of Japanese skill of foreigners which is acknowledged worldwide. Me and my oniichan (buddy, bro) Bas will then be tested on our grasp of the Japanese language, which we've been studying ourselves since May this year.

Our goal is as such:

1. Get a pass on the JLPT - L.4 test
2. Go to Japan in the Summer of 2008
3. Network in Japan, find out if any companies are interested in taking us as interns in 2009
4. Go on internship in Japan in the summer of 2009, preferably in the same company
5. ???
6. Move to Japan.

We're young & ambitious, what can I say?

I've uploaded my selection of successful Mastermundo pictures. I'm quite satisfied with the result, seeing this is my first serious attempt at photographing in a dark area. Playing around with the flash settings and everything worked out really well in the end.

Featured artist of the week - Tatsuyuki Tanaka

Tatsuyuki Tanaka (田中達之）is an excellent manga artist with quite a reputation - for he was responsible for the father of anime films, Akira (アキラ). While I enjoyed his films, I love his stills even better. The sheer atmosphere they seem to breathe, and the very selective use of colours grab me each time I see it again.

The scans originate from his latest work Cannabis Works.

The aftermath of MasterMundo

Mastermundo was quite a show.

Everything arranged on the very last minute, Mastermundo was a great ad hoc achievement. Many of the guest speakers diverted off their original plans which undoubtedly consisted of doing something less awesome to be part of this rapid-fire presentation afternoon, during which the speakers could share their thoughts among equal-minded peers (but interestingly enough, also from completely different fields).

Interactive Media Design years 1 & 2 teamed up to deliver the project as professional as time, skill, gear and motivation allowed it. Professional portrait shoots, interviews, beamer and sound control, along with triple-documented methods (video, audio and photography), there were very few arguments that might have suggested amateurism. All in all I feel positive about the outcome and that as far as I can tell, the audience did so too.

Of course, for next year's MasterMundo there are still many things that yield to improvement, but at the same time, considering the short time span, it couldn't have been much better.
