Much of what we designers do involve getting from Idea 1 to Concept X. One of the most efficient methods involves taking notes, which help you to see your ideas on paper and evolve them -- i even think ideas on paper can cause a spark a lot sooner than when you try to develop the concept in your brain. This doesn't apply to everyone of course but it certainly does to me. Cross-referencing notes, leafing back through the notebook, applying old notes to new ideas, and so on.
